The National Eligibility Test (NET): An Eligibility Exam for Ph.D. in India

National Eligibility Test is organized by the University Grants Commission on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. NET as it is popularly known, is conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian national’s for two things-

· Assistant Professor (AP)

· Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

If a student qualifies for the NET then they are eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor in any UGC-approved university and Institutions. A JRF candidate, on the other hand, receives a monthly scholarship while pursuing a Ph.D. from a UGC-recognized institution; a JRF candidate is also eligible for an assistant professorship.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced in 2013 that the candidates who clear the NET successfully would be eligible for lucrative (besides private college lectureship) jobs in public sector undertakings (PSUs). PSUs can use UGC-NET scores for the recruitment process of the posts of executives in their organizations in disciplines like science (R&D), management, corporate communications, human resources, and finance.

UGC NET Exam - A Brief Overview

While there is no upper age limit when you apply for UGC NET for AP however there are age restrictions for JRF which vary with gender and category of candidates.

Net is conducted in 81 papers in more than 224 cities across India. It is conducted twice each year usually in June and December. Every year almost eight lakh students appear for the NET examination.

The National Eligibility Test is a three-hour computer-based test. Each student has to appear in two papers Paper I a general paper common for all candidates and Paper-II, specific to the candidate. The choice of paper II depends on the candidate's post-graduation qualification. The two papers are of 300 marks with nearly 150 questions.

Students pursuing/completed/appeared for their masters from a UGC recognized university/institute with a minimum of 55% marks can appear for the NET examination. Further relaxations are given based on gender, age, category, physical and economic abilities.

UGC NET JRF- An Overview

UGC NET JRF can apply for doctoral programs in any UGC-recognized university and Institution across India. Most of the Institutions of National Importance like IIM, IIT, IIFT accept the NET JRF qualified candidates in their fellowship programs.

Many other government fellowships like Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students (MANF) are granted based on NET scores. Similarly, many research projects of government are also granted to net qualified candidates.
