Making the Right Ph.D. Choice- How?
India has more than 50000 higher educational institutions in India, of these not more than 1500 are allowed to award a Ph.D. degree. In the past ten decades, the country has produced millions of postgraduate students of which barely a few thousand have completed their Ph.D. degrees.
The research work done by the Ph.D. graduates adds to the intellectual capital of a country. Owing to the significance of this degree, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has laid stringent guidelines for both awarding and pursuing a Ph.D. Both the students and the universities must follow these regulations to ensure that the student’s degree is valid and recognized.

Care has to be taken by the Ph.D. aspirants to ensure that they take admission in a university/institution which is recognized by UGC and is following all the regulations by the authority. The aspirants also, have to decide among the various Ph.D. examination/s like National Eligibility Test (NET), Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research- National Eligibility TEST (CSIR-NET), Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT), Joint Admission Test For Masters (JAM), Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) and so on, that they might appear for, depending on their qualifications.
The aspirants also can choose, depending upon their eligibility, from Central, State, Private, Deemed University, and Institutes of National Importance. Further, they can opt for either a full-time doctoral program or a part-time one. They also have the option of applying for a government fellowship like NET JRF, CSIR-NET JRF, INSPIRE, PMRF scheme, etc., or go for a self-financed or sponsored course. On average a Ph.D. fellow usually spends 5 years (or more) to complete their degree. A lot of perseverance, dedication, and hard work go into the completion of the course. Thus the students must make an informed decision and choose a course based on their needs.
