Eligibility Exams for Ph.D. in India



An eligibility exam is a test which when qualified by a candidate makes him/her eligible to pursue Ph.D. However, it should be noted that qualifying an eligibility exam only makes the candidate eligible to pursue a Ph.D. and does not guarantee admission. There are more than a dozen eligibility exams that can be taken by


students planning to pursue a Ph.D. in India.


The Ph.D. eligibility exam in India could be broadly classified into two types- National and Independent. The National Examinations are conducted by some government bodies like National Testing Agency (NTA) which conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET). The national eligibility exams can also be conducted by a recognized institution like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) which conducts the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineers (GATE). After qualifying for a national test a student can apply to various educational institution for pursuing a Ph.D. and also for a Ph.D. fellowship across India.



Some of the most popular national eligibility examinations are the National Eligibility Test[1] (NET) conducted in 81 subjects, General Aptitude in Engineering (GATE) conducted in 27 subjects, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research- National Eligibility TEST (CSIR-NET) conducted in 6 science subjects, Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT), Joint Admission Test For Masters (JAM), Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET), Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) and so on. The score of the eligibility exams can be used to obtain admission in doctoral programs, integrated programs, and/or to avail of Ph.D. fellowships.


The independent eligibility exam on the other hand is conducted by an individual university/ institution and qualifying these exams can help the scholar secure admission in only that particular academic institution.
