GATE: AN ELIGIBILITY EXAM FOR Ph.D.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is also an eligibility exam for Ph.D. aspirants in India. Most of the prestigious institutions accept GATE score as the basis for admission in their Ph.D. Program and even for the award of JRF. To name a few institutes who accept gate score - IIM, IIIT , IIT , IISc and so on.

The Ministry of Education, Government of India has entrusted the responsibility of conducting and organizing GATE examination to a conglomerate of seven Indian Institute of Technology & Indian Institute of Science.



The GATE Exam

The national level examination is a computer-based test conducted annually usually in February. Each year one or two papers are added in the gambit of GATE subjects. In 2019 the test was conducted in 24 papers, one paper Biomedical Engineering was added in 2020 making it a total of 25. Last year in 2021 two new papers Environmental Science & Engineering and Humanities & Social Science were added, taking the total number of papers to 27.


The Year 2021

The year 2021 was noteworthy in the history of GATE for two major reasons; firstly the eligibility criteria were relaxed to allow third-year students to take the exam as well. Earlier, the eligibility was limited to graduates or fourth-year students only. Secondly, now even Arts and Commerce students can give the test.

Gate paper has three different types of questions - Multiple Choice Questions( MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). The paper has a total of 65 questions, 15 from general papers common to all students, and the remaining would be subject-specific. The total paper is of 100 marks. The paper has negative marking which varies across sections and question types.

GATE can be attempted in two different papers in one go; however, the combinations of the two papers are pre-decided by the organizers. Certain other conditions also have to be adhered to.

Age is no bar in GATE, as long as a candidate fulfills the educational qualification eligibility. A candidate can attempt the GATE examination as many times as they want.

Special provisions like extended time and scribe facility are provided to ensure a smooth and easy examination process for the ‘specially enabled candidates attempting GATE.


The Scope of Gate Examination

Gate qualified candidates can apply to postgraduate, doctorate courses, and even to Indian PSU for employment. Many international universities also accept gate-qualified candidates for their post-graduate and doctorate programs. There are multiple other fellowships and government projects that ask for GATE-qualified candidates.
